Utilitarian Arts
Utilitarian Art Forms is an exploration of a variety of utilitarian and decorative arts produced by artisans and crafts people from around the world. This course is intended to provide hands-on experiences which emphasize cultural appreciation and personal expression. Students will increase their ability to refine and apply knowledge and skills in a variety of forms. Emphasis is placed on the creation of quality products of increasing difficulty within each unit of study. Students may be expected to provide their own materials for advanced projects.
Materials needed: #2 (HB) graphite pencils and erasers
8 1/2" x 11" or larger sketchbook with blank drawing paper or mixed media paper
Black waterproof fine tip and ultra fine tip markers (like Sharpie or equivalent)
Set of 24 color pencils
Set of broad tip water based markers, such as Crayola or Rose Art
Any additional materials for a specific individual project that are not provided by the instructor (such as beads and other findings)
Set of inexpensive watercolors, like Crayola set of eight colors (optional)

Expectations for This Class:
1. Check in to this course daily and on time. I will be taking daily attendance. You will be given your iPad in the first week of school. You will be able to keep up with our activities on Schoology, even if you are not present in class.
2. Check your email and Schoology messages and calendar daily for messages, instructions, and assignment deadlines.
3. Adhere to all deadlines. Turn in your work on time! These will be posted on your Schoology home page and calendar.
4. Be attentive during class instruction and/or discussion. No cell phone use or multitasking during instruction time.
Classroom Expectations: As a member of this class, you are expected to listen to directions, work as directed and use common sense and care when working with materials. You are expected to follow the Code of Conduct of SDHS and Worcester County Public Schools. Also, you are expected to follow social distancing and other safety guidelines as set forth by the Worcester County Board of Education. The expectations of this course are easy to follow. If you exhibit behavior that is disruptive to this class, your behavior will be noted and addressed according to school policy. I will take attendance at the beginning of the class each day and then begin instruction for the day.
Course Outcomes
Students are expected to participate in class on a daily basis and complete work within the given deadline. Make-up work will be completed by the student outside of regular class time. All assignments will be graded on a point system. The final grade will include cumulative points from in-class assignments, projects, unit quizzes, class participation, and a cumulative final exam. The end of the semester county exam will count for 20% of your final grade. Projects are graded on the following learning objectives and directions, art technique, effort/participation, creativity/experimentation, and craftsmanship.
Schoology Code of Conduct: When posting assignments and discussions on Schoology, students will need to follow the following guidelines:
1. While on Schoology, what I say and how I say it will be school appropriate. 2. I will use discussion posts to discuss school related content only. 3. I will use a respectful tone of voice when posting. All school rules and consequences related to harassment apply to Schoology. 4. I will use appropriate grammar instead of texting language. 5. I will not reveal any personal information on Schoology. This includes telephone numbers, addresses, email addresses, etc.
Posting and Replying to Messages and Comments in Schoology: 1. Post a note to the whole group if your question is about something the whole group should know (assignments, instructions, due dates, etc.) 2. Send a note only to your teacher if you are unclear about directions or worried about submitting an assignment. 3. Don't post questions or comments about personal issues or topics. 4. Keep your conversations on topic. 5. If you are not sure if a word, joke or image is okay, then it probably is not. DO NOT write posts that tease, bully, annoy, spam, or gossip about any other person.
Inappropriate Content: If you think there is something inappropriate posted in Schoology, please tell your teacher immediately!
Punctuation and Grammar: No texting lingo. I am ur tcher...show me that u have lrnd how 2 spell! Do not put sentences in all caps, it is considered SHOUTING! Use punctuation as you would when writing a paper...one exclamation point or question mark does the trick! Remember to refrain from inappropriate language.
Submitting Artwork: All artwork submitted for assignments must be original (created by you). Submitting images that are uploaded from the internet is considered plagiarism. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and is a violation of the school and countywide Code of Conduct. When uploading images into Schoology or attaching them as an email attachment, be sure to include your name on a post it note or piece of paper in the image that verifies that the artwork image is taken by you and the artwork is yours.
Technology in the Classroom
Students will refrain from cell phone use except when given permission by the teacher. Advanced notice will be given when cell phones will be needed (ie: for a review). Laptops and iPad devices will be used on a regular basis. Students are required to bring them to class daily.

- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the visual arts as a basic aspect of history and human experience.
- Students will demonstrate sustained involvement in using manipulative and organizational skills to develop proficiency in a variety of techniques and processes.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to identify, analyze, and apply criteria for making aesthetic judgment about visual arts projects.
- Students will be sufficiently prepared for further study of the visual arts in advanced level art courses.
- Students will maintain a sketchbook and portfolio that will hold paperwork, written work, and assignments for this course.
- Students will be responsible for completing several art projects for each unit of study.
